How Do I Use My WD Passport External Hard Drive?

I don’t know if I’m missing a step with my external hard drive, but I am lost.

I purchased a MacBook two days ago and got a WD Passport External Hard Drive (250gb) so I can transfer my movies, music, and photos over.

Everyone I know is telling me all I have to do is drag and drop the items I want on my hard drive into the hard drive.

However, I don’t know where to drop things. Also, when I think I am doing it right and I plug it into my Mac, it doesn’t work.

My question:

- How do I use this thing?
- Where do I drop my files?
- How do I retrieve them once their on the hard drive and plugged into my mac?

All in all, How do I use my WD Passport External Hard Drive?

I checked the support part of their website but it was useless.
Thanks for those who have already answered. I’ve never used an external hard drive before and feel like I’m trying to read a different language lol….

I have one other question,

Will the hard drive keep my playlists with iTunes?

JUst plug it into your computer, it will auto install. You add files to it like you would to a folder. go to mycomputer, click on the WDPassport icon thingy, and save your file there (or just drag and drop a file into it). if you want to get it back, just open it like a folder (or like when you open up to see everything on your C drive) and open it.

i have WD passport hard disk too..
    it’s easy..
it should pop out auto-play automaticly when you plug in your hard disk.. and just drag to your hard disk folder.. for example: assume your hard disk is E: WesternDigital << double click it and just drop your file there..

hope this help.. just e-mail me if it confusing

The drive comes unformatted so you will have to format it. I copied this from a forum I found since I am very familiar with the pc but not the mac.

If all you want to do is to format it for use with the Mac, then plug it into the Mac while the Mac is powered up and then start up Disk Utility (should be in the Ultilities folder in the Applications folder). When Disk Utility opens up, there will be a list of drives along the left hand side of the window. Select the drive and click in the Erase tab.

    good luck

Ok so if you want to setup your playlist on the external drive you need to go into itunes a change the location of your itunes music folder. You will find this under the edit menu. Then go to the advanced tab. You will have to show it the folder you want to use on your external drive. For example if you have more music to add, put it in a folder on the wd external drive and name the folder something meaningful. Then add the folder location to itunes using the procedure I described above.

    Good luck again.

first, go to the ext drive and create some category folders- or just one (and sort things out later). I think its easier to set up, say, ‘pictures’, ‘mp3s’, ‘pdfs’ NOW, because if I let it for later, it won’t get done:)

Verify that the files you want are on the external drive, then plug it into the mac….the mac should see the drive automatically, then it’s just a matter of drag & drop for each folder to get all your files to the mac.

If it doesn’t see the ext drive, or sees the drive but not the folders….somebody else will need to help you. Mac OS is a mystery to me, though it’s operating system HAS to be better, easier, more intuitive than Microsoft’s.

    Good luck.
